On forging bipartisanship in Congress and throughout the country, former Senator Mitchell noted that "Democracy offers a balancing mechanism," and added that "optimism and ultimately the hope of the American people must always prevail."
Former Senator Lott also believed in America’s ability to create consensus across the aisle, stating that "It’s important that members of Congress go to Washington not to make a statement but to make a difference." He added, "Compromise is not a dirty word. It is the art of governing."
The former Senators ended the conversation on an optimistic note, pointing out that despite challenges, the United States of America has always proven its ability to rise above them. Former Senator Mitchell concluded that although the country has made mistakes, "the United States of America is, and remains, and will be the best, most open, and the most free society in all of human history."
